Why shouldn't we use plastic bags? It takes 1000 years for polyethylene bags to degrade/break down. Plastic bags don't biodegrade, they photo-degrade, breaking down into smaller and smaller toxic bits contaminating soil and waterways. They then enter the food chain as animals ingest them, this is a terrible problem around the world.
It's called “The Great Pacific garbage patch,” a floating gyre the size of France made up of plastic particles. Plastic can be ingested by animals and fish endangering wildlife around the world.

Hawaii was the first state to ban plastic bags in the US and California has also brought the ban in. Bangladesh was the first country in the world to introduce a ban on plastic bags back in 2002. A number of other countries have banned single-use plastic bags including Kenya, Rwanda and China.
